Private data
When open data is not enough
Some of the data you need is sold, licensed, or shared only under agreement. Ask for access, or offer data you hold, and we help set up a fair and lawful exchange between holder and user.
Four routes
Ways to get non-open data
Which route fits depends on who holds the data and why it is not open.
Buy or license
Existing commercial datasets and APIs, such as satellite heat maps, flood models, trade records, company and labour market data.
Apply for access
Restricted microdata for research, analysed in a secure environment. Usually for recognised research institutions.
Agree a data-sharing deal
Operational, sensor or asset data held by an organisation, shared for a clear purpose under a written agreement.
Commission new data
When nothing exists yet: a survey, measurement campaign or study, run by a research provider.
How an exchange works
From question to agreed access
- 1Ask or offer
Describe the data you need, or the data you hold, in the form below. It is free and non-binding.
- 2Scope
We check whether open data already answers the question, and look for holders or providers who fit.
- 3Introduce
With your agreement, we put you in touch with the holder or user. Nobody gets your details without your yes.
- 4Agree
Holder and user agree purpose, licence, price if any, security and duration in writing.
- 5Exchange
Data moves directly from holder to user through the holder's own channel. Good open results can come back to the catalogue.
Safeguards
Every exchange follows these rules
- No personal data about private individuals. Data must be about organisations, places or things, or properly anonymised or aggregated.
- Purpose and terms in writing. Every exchange has a stated purpose, a licence and a time limit agreed by both sides.
- No competitively sensitive information between competitors, such as current prices, customer lists or bids.
- The holder sets the price and terms. You see them before you commit. We do not resell data you obtain.
- Data goes directly from holder to user. We do not store private datasets; we keep only a record of the request.
Request or offer

Questions
About non-open data
Who pays?
The data holder decides whether access costs money and how much. Many sources offer free tiers or research access. Sending a request or an offer costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
Can I sell or license my data here?
You can offer it. We help find relevant users and introduce you. The agreement, price and payment are between you and the user.
Which data do you not handle?
Personal data about private individuals, and information that competitors should not share with each other, such as prices or customer lists.
Do you store private data?
No. Non-open data moves directly between holder and user under their agreement. We keep a record of the request only.
Is a listed provider your partner?
No. Listings are examples to help you search. They are not endorsements, and we have no commercial ties to them unless a listing says so.
